basics Gesäuse & Ennstal

Our ‘beginner course’ takes you step by step into climbing on real rock. You need no prior knowledge – we’ll show you everything you need to know to be able to climb independently and safely later on. Alongside belaying and climbing technique, we also talk about equipment, behaviour on the rock, and we approach topics like fear of heights or fear of falling in a relaxed way so that you feel comfortable – and all of this surrounded by stunning mountain scenery.

What to expect?

Zwei Menschen beim Klettern an einer Felswand im Wald, beide tragen Helme und sind mit Kletterausrüstung gesichert.

We get started at 10 a.m. at the outdoor gear shop Vasold in Liezen. There we kick off with a short theoretical session on equipment knowledge. We then drive to one of the excellent crags in the Ennstal or Gesäuse. The ropes are already hanging from above, so you’re secured in top-rope and can sit into the rope and take a break at any time. Once we’ve got used to the height, the gear and the belaying technique, we gradually work our way up to lead climbing – that is, climbing and belaying independently without a pre-hung rope.

Course goal: After this course you’ll be able to move independently on the rock and make your first self-sufficient climbing experiences. You will have learned all the necessary knowledge in the areas of equipment, knots, belaying and rope technique, as well as climbing technique. You’ll therefore be perfectly prepared to explore the crags in your region or head off on your first climbing trip. To deepen individual topics as your climbing life develops, we recommend one of our workshops.

What do I need?

It’s enough if you’re curious and feel generally fit. You should be able to manage a short approach of 5–15 minutes on a hiking trail. Feel free to bring your own gear; otherwise we’ll provide everything for you free of charge – climbing shoes on request only.

Further Info:

Depending on the season and weather, we head out to various spots in the Gesäuse and Ennstal, for example the Gsengstein in Johnsbach or the Klettergarten Pürgg near Untergrimming. Carpooling from Liezen or Graz for up to 4 participants is also available on request. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, we’ll fall back to the City Rock Liezen indoor climbing wall.
